2021 (Australia) & 2023 (New Zealand)

'Sonographer' is the appropriate term for a skilled and qualified ultrasound practitioner, rather than 'ultrasonographer' or 'ultrasound technician'. Collective use of a single professional title for sonographers will help improve representation of the profession in population data.

The ASA will again campaign for members of the profession to identify as a 'sonographer' when describing their occupation in the 2021 Australian Census on Tuesday 10 August 2021.

The next Census in New Zealand is scheduled for 2023.
