ASA Launches Position Statement on AI in Sonography
The ASA has released its new Position Statement on Artificial Intelligence and Sonography, providing guidance on how AI should be safely and ethically integrated into ultrasound practice in Australia and New Zealand.
Opportunities for care
The Statement recognises that AI has the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and consistency, streamline workflows, reduce scan times and minimise repetitive strain for sonographers. It also notes that AI-enabled tools can play a valuable role in supporting rural and remote services by assisting with decision support and telehealth integration.
Professional responsibilities
While AI can assist with many aspects of practice it cannot replace the expertise and judgement of sonographers. Sonographers remain ethically and professionally responsible for interpreting findings and delivering safe and high-quality care. The ASA supports a shared responsibility model in which sonographers, employers and vendors work together to ensure that AI is introduced in a way that is safe, transparent and aligned with regulatory requirements. Importantly, AI tools with diagnostic functions must be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia or Medsafe in New Zealand before being used in clinical practice.
Looking ahead
The Position Statement reinforces the need for ongoing education and professional development to ensure sonographers are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to use AI responsibly. It also highlights the importance of ethical practice, patient consent and privacy protections in building trust and maintaining the highest standards of care. Given the rapid pace of technological change the ASA will review this guidance every six to twelve months to ensure it remains current and relevant.
Members are encouraged to read the full Position Statement and consider how these principles can be applied in their own professional practice.
