Celebrating Our Volunteers on International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contribution of ASA volunteers and acknowledge their vital role in supporting our organisation, and the broader sonography profession.

Volunteers are central to the work of the ASA. They generously contribute their time, skills, and professional knowledge to help shape the direction of the Association and strengthen outcomes for our members and the community. Their commitment enables the ASA to deliver high-quality resources, education, advocacy, and events for more than 8,000 members across Australia and New Zealand.

ASA volunteers support the ASA in a wide variety of areas, serving on branch committees, special interest groups, program committees and advisory groups. Through these roles, they help guide governance, maintain professional standards, support research, and drive the education and development of the sonography profession.

International Volunteer Day, marked each year on 5 December, provides a global platform to recognise the impact of volunteer service and to thank those who give their time to support others. To mark the occasion in 2025, the ASA donated $10 on behalf of each volunteer to a charity of their choice, resulting in a total donation of $3,250 as a small token of appreciation for their invaluable contributions.

The charities supported on behalf of our volunteers reflect causes that are meaningful to our community:

  • SARRAH develops and delivers services for allied health professionals, supporting equitable and sustainable health and wellbeing in rural and remote Australian communities.

  • Beyond Blue focuses on mental health support, awareness, and breaking down stigma.

  • Cancer Council works towards a cancer-free future through research, prevention, and support services.

  • Pink Elephant supports families affected by pregnancy and infant loss.

  • Starship Hospital provides family centred care to infants, children, young people, and their whānau in hospital and in the community across New Zealand and the South Pacific.

The ASA is deeply grateful to every volunteer who contributes to the ASA. Your passion for sonography and willingness to share your expertise continues to make a meaningful difference to the profession.
