Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome as Rare Cause of Abdominal Pain: An Ultrasound Case Study

This Sonography journal case report illustrates two cases of superior mesenteric artery syndrome, a rare disorder where abdominal pain occurs as a consequence to compression of the duodenum due to acute angulation of the superior mesenteric artery.

This condition can be overlooked by sonographers.

Missed diagnosis can be avoided by checking the angle between the superior mesenteric artery origin and aorta, and the distance between the superior mesenteric artery and aorta at the level where the duodenum passes between them.
