Certification
ASA Advanced Certification in Endometriosis Ultrasound
The ASA is developing its Advanced Certification in Endometriosis Ultrasound.
This certification will recognise member sonographers who have demonstrated advanced ultrasound assessment and interpretation, as defined in the ASA Endometriosis Ultrasound Guideline. It will support a workforce moving from foundational practice to advanced imaging, helping deliver accurate diagnosis, stronger multidisciplinary care and better outcomes for people living with endometriosis and related complex gynaecological conditions.
The certification will bring together competency standards, education and assessment to support professional recognition and consistent, high-quality patient care.
We are aiming to launch in July 2027. Further details will be shared as development progresses.

Recognising advanced sonographer expertise
Sonographers develop advanced endometriosis ultrasound capabilities through education, training and clinical experience. Certification provides a mechanism to demonstrate and formally recognise these capabilities against agreed professional standards.
The certification aims to:
- Recognise advanced knowledge, clinical reasoning and practical skills in endometriosis ultrasound.
- Provide a clear reference for sonographers developing their expertise.
- Support consistent assessment, clinically useful reporting and multidisciplinary care.
- Support ongoing professional development and maintenance of advanced capability.
Certification will be voluntary. Sonographers may continue to perform endometriosis ultrasound examinations within their individual competence, scope of practice and local clinical governance arrangements without holding the credential.
Shaped by members and clinical expertise
The draft competency framework and standards have been informed by clinical expert review, ASA member consultation, external stakeholder feedback, and the Clinical Expert Advisory Committee. Education and assessment are being developed alongside the standards, with further member input to inform how certification will work in practice.
Competency framework and standards
The draft framework describes the capabilities expected for Level 2 (advanced) endometriosis ultrasound practice across six domains.

The competency framework and standards are coming soon. The final document will be published following ASA Board approval.
Education and assessment
Education and assessment are being developed around the competency standards. Online learning will support knowledge and skills development, with assessment addressing knowledge, applied clinical reasoning and practical scanning skills. Eligibility, course requirements, recognition of existing expertise, fees, and recertification arrangements will be shared once finalised.
The pathway will be tested before it opens to members. Feedback, review and continuous improvement will inform its ongoing development.
Introducing the certification webinar
