Are Transvaginal Ultrasounds withheld from non-sexually active adults?

Transvaginal ultrasound is generally considered the ultrasound technique for assessing gynaecological organs.  

The research in this Sonography journal article demonstrates that there is variation in practice across Australia and New Zealand.

This survey of 139 sonographers showed that just over half of respondents routinely offered their patients a transvaginal ultrasound.

Sonographer opinions on whether transvaginal ultrasound should be the ultrasound imaging of choice were influenced by patient’s sexual history, patient consent, patient tolerance, culture and religion, and the right to quality imaging.
