Celebrating our branches | August-December 2025 highlights

ASA branches across Australia and New Zealand have been buzzing with activity, hosting a wide variety of events that brought members together to learn, connect and share expertise. From workshops and engaging case nights to festive social gatherings, more than 450 members took part in CPD activities designed to inspire and support sonographers at every career stage. Here's a look back at the highlights from August to December 2025.


Hands-on scanning: plantar feet and ankles at Auckland | 16 August

The ASA Auckland Branch hosted a hands-on live scanning session with experienced MSK tutors. This session provided tips and tricks for sonographers learning ankle and foot (including plantar) scans. Experienced sonographers benefited from improving their technique and examinations by attending this session. Tutors included Scott Allen, Alison Keay, Olwen Clarke & Zeenat Khan.


Women's Imaging Workshop at Hunter Valley | 6 September

The ASA Newcastle Branch hosted a Women's Imaging session for Sonographers with a range of ultrasound topics, including a live scanning workshop. There were live scanning sessions focused on endometriosis. A range of women's imaging was covered in this branch event. Presenters included Candice Learmouth, Dr Alisa Borbolla Foster, Greg O'Connor, Jessica Sincalair & Robyn Boman.


Leg artery ultrasound, including assessing bypass grafts at Sunshine Coast | 24 September

The ASA Sunshine Coast Branch hosted an informative session on leg artery ultrasound presented by Annie O’Connor & Rebecca Saunus. This event focused on providing a comprehensive overview of leg artery ultrasound, with a special emphasis on assessing bypass grafts. It also explored common pitfalls encountered in practice, sharing practical insights, tips, and techniques to support sonographers of all experience levels.

Interesting Cases and Topics at Wagga Wagga | 16 October

The ASA Riverina Branch hosted an interesting cases and topics night, where members interacted and shared their interesting work. It was an excellent opportunity for presenters to show their skills. Presenters included Nicole Shortis, Amanda Burgess and Genevieve MacDonald.

Queensland Branch Ultrasound Trivia Night | 17 October

The ASA Queensland Branch hosted an energising evening of socialising, food, and Ultrasound Trivia. It was a perfect night for winding down and learning something new. Members put their knowledge to the test and learnt something new.


Toowoomba Branch Ultrasound of the Placenta | 23 October

The ASA Toowoomba Branch hosted the ‘Ultrasound of the Placenta’ presented by Dr Kate Russo, who is a senior lecturer at CQU. Dr Russo is highly experienced in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound with a special interest in echocardiography.


SA Friday Afternoons in the New England Northwest | 8 November

The ASA Hunter New England Branch hosted an Intensive Workshop. An impressive line-up of guest speakers included S.A. Sonographer Stephen Bird, Belmont Sonographer Greg O’Connor, FMF NE/NW Dr Jyoti Chaku, ARRH Obstetrician Dr Eugene Mihaylov and Senior Nurse Educator, Kristina Hall, Westmead NICU, along with HNE sonographers Kylie McGowan, Anna Donoghue, Jenna Read, David Bourke and Adrian Snowden. Attendees valued the opportunity to learn in an interactive setting and strengthen professional connections. Topics included Fetal heart & live scanning, Bowel pathology, Ovarian torsion, Paediatric hips, neonatal heads and spines & live scanning, 3rd Trimester scanning, Ectopic pregnancies, Diaphragmatic Paralysis, Indigenous Maternal Health, Upper limb anatomy, Neonatal Resuscitation and neonatal HEI and Trivia – acute pathology.


Interesting Case Morning at Mudgee | 8 November

The ASA Central West NSW Branch hosted a fun morning of socialising and learning at Mudgee Hospital. Members shared their interesting work. This was an excellent opportunity for everyone to hone their presentation skills in a supportive environment. Presenters included Olivia Houghton, Jackie Spurway, Sheree White, Kirrilea Mills, Sharnie Nelson & Micaela Gumbley.


South Australia Branch Christmas Case Study Night | 14 November

The ASA South Australia Branch hosted a Christmas Case Studies Evening, along with a trivia session for its members, which was very popular and immersive. Presenters included Casey Smedley, Loan Ho, Leigh Fitzgerald, Gary McCulloch, Maria Giannitsas, Angus Bland, Lino Piotto and Roger Gent.


Sunshine Coast Interesting Case Night | 20 November

The ASA Sunshine Coast Branch hosted an Interesting Case Night for both new and experienced presenters to share their experiences in a friendly environment. Presenters included Brian Richards, Tarryn Short, Kahla Mawby, Meg Cazaly & Keely Reid.


Western Australia Branch Interesting Case Night | 10 December

The ASA Western Australia Branch hosted an interesting case evening. More than 70 members attended. Presenters included Joan Nielsen, Sam Nimmo, Keelyn Harman, Jamie Maunder, Natasha Harrop McGurk, Gail Crawford, Tasma Scanlan, Mona Savani, Arusha Pather & Suki Yuan.
