Have Your Say | Phase 2 of the MBS Ultrasound Review
The Department of Health has released Phase 2 of the Review of Select Medicare Funded Diagnostic Imaging Ultrasound Services. This consultation proposes changes to Medicare-funded pelvic and obstetric ultrasound items.
The ASA will prepare a submission on behalf of members and is seeking your feedback to ensure our response reflects the views and experiences of practising sonographers.
What is being reviewed?
The consultation is assessing whether Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) ultrasound items are up to date, clinically appropriate and accessible. Proposals include:
- Updating item descriptors to improve clarity and reflect complexity
- Revising fees to better match time, expertise and resources
- Introducing new items for specific clinical scenarios
- Adding safeguards such as service limits and documentation requirements
Proposed changes
Obstetric ultrasound
- Clearer item structure for singleton, twin and higher-order multiple pregnancies
- Revised fees recognising the workload of multiple pregnancies
- New items for further examinations when clinically required
Pelvic ultrasound
- Increased fees for general pelvic ultrasound (item 55065)
- Updated descriptors and fees for ultrasound with saline infusion (proposed items 55990 and 55993)
- New item for contrast-based tubal patency testing (HyCoSy/HyFoSy) used in fertility care
Provide your feedback
The ASA encourages members to review the consultation paper and share your feedback on the proposed pelvic and obstetric changes.
