In conversation with Pink Elephants: Supporting families after pregnancy and infant loss
ASA is proud to collaborate with Pink Elephants ahead of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, 15 October 2026, an annual observance to remember babies lost through miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, SIDS, newborn death and other forms of pregnancy and infant loss.
Founded in Sydney in 2016, Pink Elephants is a national charity providing evidence-based resources, information and peer support for people impacted by early pregnancy loss. Pink Elephants also supports family and friends, corporate partners and healthcare professionals seeking practical and compassionate ways to help.

Sonographers are often among the first healthcare professionals to share unexpected news with parents and play an important role in helping families navigate pregnancy loss. A new ASA CPD podcast featuring Pink Elephants Co-Founder and CEO Sam Payne explores how sonographers can respond with compassion during these moments, including the impact of thoughtful language, small gestures and acknowledging a patient’s loss.

Being mindful of language is really important. If there is a partner in the room, including them in the conversation so they clearly know what the next steps are is so important. Sam Payne |
