Member Consultation: Draft Position Statement on Artificial Intelligence and Sonography

The ASA has drafted a new Position Statement - Artificial Intelligence and Sonography, which is now open for member consultation.

The draft outlines key principles for the safe, ethical, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in clinical practice, ensuring that advancements in AI continue to support and enhance the vital role of sonographers. As AI evolves rapidly across healthcare, it is vital that the profession takes an active role in guiding its integration into sonography, safeguarding patient care and professional standards.

It addresses several critical areas, including the need for rigorous validation of AI tools, maintaining sonographer oversight in diagnostic processes, protecting patient confidentiality, and supporting ongoing education and training. The draft reinforces that AI is not a replacement for sonographers’ independent clinical judgment, and that sonographers remain professionally and ethically responsible for patient care. It also emphasises the critical role of sonographers in advocating for the safe and evidence-based use of AI in clinical settings. The ASA supports a shared responsibility model between sonographers, employers, and vendors to ensure AI is introduced safely and appropriately.

We value the insights and experience of our members and invite you to review the draft statement and share your feedback. Your input is valuable to ensure the final document reflects the needs and expectations of the sonography profession.
